The Ipad
A new handheld tablet computing device from Apple Inc. that first launched in January 2010. The iPad is designed for consumers who want a mobile device that is bigger than a smartphone but smaller than a laptop for entertainment multimedia.
The iPad device is roughly the size of a sheet of paper and weighs 1.5 pounds. The screen is a 9.7-inch LED backlit glossy multi-touch screen, capable of displaying up to 1024x768 pixel resolution

The iPad is currently in its fourth generation, with the iPad 4 having debuted in late October 2012. A smaller (7.85-inch) version of the iPad called the iPad Mini is also available.

Controls
On/Off button: Top, right-hand corner Click once to turn off screen Hold down then swipe to shut down There is no need to shut down the iPad very often. The battery will last for about 10 hours of use before charging. Mute: Slide switch, right side. Volume: Right side; push up for loud, down for silent Speaker grill: Bottom right Connector: Bottom middle; this is where you plug the iPad into a wall socket to charge or connect to your computer to charge or download information. Cameras: right corner on back and middle top on front. Headphone jack: top, left corner Home: middle, bottom. This is how you can always return to the home screen. Parts of the Home Screen Status Bar: across top of the screen Left--wifi signal / carrier Middle--clock Right--battery life Dock: Across the bottom of screen. These are your most-used apps. The dots right above the dock show how many pages of Apps Search Page: slide home screen to the right. Personalizing your iPad Settings: App looks like gears. Tap on the App and it will take you to your ipad setting controls. Wi-Fi: Choose a wi-fi to connect to when possible. Each time you get near that connection, your iPad will automatically connect. Bluetooth: allows you to connect with other devices such as your car, a keyboard, etc. Do Not Disturb: all calls will be silenced except those on your favorites Notifications: you may choose which notifications will show on notification screen. To check notifications, pull down on the clock at the top of the home screen. General: Passcode: Autolock--select how long you want the iPad to wait before the home screen locks. Passcode--a 4-digit number that you have to enter to unlock your iPad. Advanced Passcode--you can change the passcode to 4 letters/numbers instead of just numbers. iCloud: turn on "Find my iPad" before you do anything else. Saving things to the cloud can save storage space on your iPad. Sound: Here you can take off the keyboard clicks (slide to off) You can also silence the lock screen noise. Here you also choose what sound you want for all the alerts on the iPad. Wallpaper and Brightness: Choose a picture for the lock screen and your home screen. You can choose one of the available backgrounds or choose one you have saved on your computer. Multi-tasking bar: Double tap the Home button. It will show all the apps that are open on the iPad. Swipe right and left to see all open apps. iPad will control these, you don't need to close them. If they use gps or navigation, then they may be consuming the battery...close these apps. To Close/Move an App Hold your finger down on an app until it starts jiggling. To Close: touch the minus sign on the top left-hand side of app. To Move: while the app is jiggling, drag it with your finger. You can have up to 6 icons in the Dock. Put the icons you use the most there, so they will always be on the page you are on. Folders: To put icons in folder, drag one icon on top of the other and give the folder a name. Multi-Touch gestures (may have to turn on in General settings) 4 Finger Swipe Up: multi-tasking bar appears. Lets you see open apps Lets you bluetooth a signal to a projector Lets you control sound of Background mode Pinch 5 fingers together: close app and return to home screen 4 Finger Swipe to left: see all open apps Apps on the iPad Safari: web browser Cool thing about Safari, you can save a webpage to your desktop by using the arrow coming out of box by the address bar. Notes: notetaking These notes can be sent to others; just click Share button Keyboard is like a normal keyboard' If you type with your thumbs, you can split the keyboard by pulling on each side of the keyboard with your thumbs. Camera: can take still photos or videos from front or back camera Easy to share one or several photos with the share button (top right) Shortcut--use 2 fingers and drag over several photos to select them. Screenshot--hold down home button and on/off button at same time. Maps: find a location and tap for directions. Calendar: can add reminders for upcoming events with alerts. Messages: iMessage allows you to receive messages on your iPad. You can sync them with your iPhone. I send messages to my iPad by using my email address. Buy Apps at the App Store Go to App Store Icon Choose an app you would like to put on your iPad. There are lots of great, free apps. (see links to right) When you have chosen an app and clicked "Buy Now" it will ask for your Apple ID. If you have an iPhone and already have purchased apps, I would use that same User ID. If you scroll to the bottom of the page, it will tell you what user ID you are using, give you the chance to change and allow you to redeem an iTunes card. Genius--Apple recommends other apps for you based on your purchases. Buy Music at the iTunes store You can use home sharing to listen to music that you have on your laptop or iPhone. |
